OPELIKA, Ala. – The Alabama Retail Association has named Anna Claire and Matthew Stinson, founders of Stinson Breads of Opelika, as the 2025 Emerging Retailer of the Year “Gee Award” winner. Founded in 2019, the small-town bakery has risen from a home-based sourdough operation to a thriving downtown business known for its artisan breads, pastries, and community spirit.

Presented annually, the “Gee Award” honors an up-and-coming retailer who demonstrates strong business growth and innovative retailing. Stinson Breads stood out for its rapid expansion, commitment to sustainable practices, and deep investment in its people and community.
After opening its first brick-and-mortar bakery in April 2024, Stinson Breads saw its sales grow 434% from 2023 to 2024, and another 288% in 2025. The bakery now employs 25 team members and partners with nearly 20 local restaurants and cafes, including Acre, Lucy’s, and Side Track Coffee, to supply handmade breads and pastries across the Auburn-Opelika area.

The bakery’s menu centers on handmade sourdough breads, European-style pastries, made-to-order sandwiches, and seasonal specialties such as dark chocolate & orange Christmas loaves, twice-baked apple pie croissants, and many others.
Visitors often express surprise and delight at discovering a bakery of this caliber, often found in larger cities or abroad, in downtown Opelika. “We regularly hear customers say, ‘I can’t believe this is here!’” said Anna Claire Stinson, founder and co-owner. “We’re honored to fill that gap while making high-quality, handmade food feel approachable and accessible.”
Beyond its product offerings, Stinson Breads has become a community hub – hosting monthly baking classes, seasonal celebrations, and collaborative events with local businesses.

“Stinson Breads is proof that passion and craftsmanship can create something extraordinary, not just in the products they bake, but in the community they’ve built,” said Rick Brown, president of the Alabama Retail Association. “Their growth, innovation, and dedication to their employees make them a model for the future of Alabama retail.”
Looking ahead, the Stinson’s plan to open a new 3,500-square-foot bakery and café space in downtown Opelika – increasing production capacity more than fivefold, adding indoor dining, and expanding online ordering.

“At Stinson Breads, we’re not just baking; we’re building a stronger, more connected community one loaf and neighborly moment at a time,” said Anna Claire.
The Emerging Retailer of the Year “Gee Award” is part of the Alabama Retailer of the Year Awards, an annual program that celebrates outstanding businesses contributing to Alabama’s retail economy and quality of life.
