Michelle Reeder and her family have always been dog people.
“My daughter Emily and I love spoiling and shopping for them,” she said.
So, when one of her dogs developed serious food allergies, Reeder started baking her own dog treats – free of additives, preservatives, chemicals or colors – using human-grade ingredients. That experience paved the way for Michelle to think about opening a bakery for dogs.
After months of preparation, The Barkery opened its doors in November 2016 in the Mulberry Business District of Montgomery. In addition to the wide selection of pet-friendly cookies, cakes and cupcakes, the business also offers doggie daycare services, boarding, and professional grooming and training. Brett Fuller, the Barkey’s head groomer, recently earned his American Kennel Club, or AKC, Groomer Certification. He’s the only person in Montgomery to have earned this level of certification.
Reeder says the Barkery is also on the way to having the shop AKC Safety Certified.
“Continuous improvement for our staff and shop are very important to me,” she said.
After just six months in business, Reeder says the community response has been remarkable, and she’s already had to bring in an additional staff member and equipment. She attributes the success to her faith, support from family, and her heart for taking good care of the animals that come into her shop.
“We truly treat each dog as if they were our own, and I think owners feel our passion and see the mutual joy between us and their dogs,” Reeder explained.
In addition to caring for her four-legged customers, Reeder is also passionate about the community and collaboration among small businesses. She is currently organizing efforts to engage other business owners in the Mulberry Business District.
“I love our state and especially the River Region. There is nothing to compare to true Southern small town. I am thrilled with Montgomery’s recent growth and all the exciting things going on. We’re just tickled to be a part of it,” said Reeder.
The Barkery is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Visit thebarkery.dog
