HOMEWOOD, Ala. — Eric Ferrell, president of Alabama Outdoors, has been named the Silver Alabama Retailer of the Year by the Alabama Retail Association.
Founded in 1975, Alabama Outdoors has grown into a five-location active lifestyle retailer employing more than 85 team members across Birmingham, Homewood, Trussville, Florence, and Mobile. Under Ferrell’s leadership, the company has evolved its assortment and store experience to align with the lifestyle of today’s active customer while honoring the legacy that has shaped the brand for 50 years.
“For five decades, Alabama Outdoors has been where people go to find what’s new, what’s next, and what helps them express who they are. From the start, we’ve had a pulse on what’s trending—delivering style, energy, and a sense of belonging to every generation that’s walked through our doors. Customers who once came in as college students now bring their own kids. That’s the legacy we’re proudest of—not just staying in business but staying relevant.” said Ferrell.
While Alabama Outdoors began as a specialty outfitter for the outdoor enthusiast, it has evolved into a destination for those living active, connected lives. Today, it’s known for a curated assortment of top national brands like Vuori, FP Movement, On Running, Rhoback, and Birkenstock, as well as its own private label, AOA. The company has intentionally shifted from gear-heavy offerings to trend-driven apparel, footwear, and accessories—focused on helping customers look good, feel great, and live fully.
The company’s vision is to be the destination where style meets purpose in every community we serve. In living out this vision, Alabama Outdoors supports its communities by raising funds and awareness for nonprofits including Black Warrior Riverkeeper, Freshwater Land Trust, Cahaba River Society, and United Ability, among others. The company also partners with schools, hospitals, and frontline organizations across the state, extending its impact well beyond its stores.
Rick Brown, president of the Alabama Retail Association, praised Ferrell’s leadership and the company’s lasting impact. “For 50 years, Alabama Outdoors has been part of the fabric of our state, equipping generations of Alabamians for everyday adventures while giving back to the communities they serve,” said Brown. “Eric Ferrell has built on that legacy with forward-thinking strategies and a true commitment to service.”
As Alabama Outdoors celebrates its 50th anniversary, Ferrell and his team are actively exploring growth into new markets across the Southeast. “The future is bright,” said Ferrell. “We’ll continue leading with style, purpose, and a commitment to serve every community wherever life moves them.”
Alabama Outdoors’ mission is to empower active lifestyles with trend-driven products and apparel for life’s meaningful moments—helping people look good, feel great, and live fully.
