Pharmacy board can set the ratio of pharmacy technicians to compounding pharmacists as of June 1

Act No. 2024-37
By Sen. Billy Beasley, D-Clayton

Starting June 1,  the state pharmacy board can set the ratio of pharmacy technicians to supervising compounding pharmacists.

April 4, the governor signed into law Act No. 2024-37 by Sen. Billy Beasley, D-Clayton. The Alabama House approved the legislation March 19, while the Alabama Senate approved it Feb. 27.

Current Alabama Board of Pharmacy rule states that four technicians per full-time licensed pharmacist on duty is sufficient, two of which must be certified by a credentialing organization approved by the board. The rule also allows three technicians if one of them is certified.

Under current Alabama law, no more than three technicians may assist a compounding pharmacist.

Rep. Phillip Rigsby, R-Huntsville, who carried similar legislation in the House, said the board wants the authority to maintain a consistent 4-to-1 ratio. Beasley said whatever the ratio is, the board should set it.
