New law allows alcohol sales during Sunday brunch

Local governments that already have Sunday alcohol sales can permit Sunday morning sales under a bill the Alabama Legislature passed on the  final day of the 2017 regular session. The governor signed Act No. 2017-444 into law May 26, 2017. It was effective immediately.

A county or city through an ordinance or resolution could authorize businesses to begin alcohol sales at 10 a.m. Sundays under HB353 by Rep. Juandalynn Givan, D-Birmingham, also known as the “brunch” or “mimosa” bill. Sunday alcoholic beverage sales would have to already be legal in the city and county and those local governments that established a later start time through a referendum would have to hold another referendum to change the time. The law also allows an earlier Sunday sales start time through a local law.

Previously, Sunday alcohol sales couldn’t begin until noon or later under general Alabama law.
