Bill mandating refund policy on receipts goes nowhere

Legislation to require retailers to print their refund policy on their customer receipts went nowhere in the 2018 regular session.

Sen. Trip Pittman, R-Daphne, wanted a printed refund policy to include whether an exchange, store credit or cash refund was offered; any limitations on the types of goods that could not be exchanged, credited or refunded; and the length of time a consumer had to bring back merchandise.

SB374 made no provisions for the cost of reprogramming cash registers or for those retailers who provide hand-written receipts. It never received even committee consideration.
