Act No. 2024-72
By Sen. Gerald Allen, R-Cottondale
Beginning Oct. 1, governmental entities in Alabama cannot restrict the purchase or use of appliances based solely on the type of energy or energy generation used to operate the appliance.
Gov. Kay Ivey signed Act No. 2024-72 by Sen. Gerald Allen, R-Cottondale, into law April 11. The Alabama House approved the legislation April 2, and the Senate passed it Feb. 27.
The new law is supported by natural gas companies and the Alabama Propane Gas Association. About half of the states have adopted similar legislation known as energy choice laws. More than 80 municipalities, mostly in California, have passed or attempted to pass legislation that would limit the use of natural gas or propane.
