MONTGOMERY – Raymond E. Cohen, founder and co-president of Cohens Electronics and Appliances Inc. in Montgomery, recently was elected to the Alabama Retail Association’s board of directors. Cohen’s term began Jan. 1 and his business has been an Alabama Retail member since 1983.
In 2008, the Alabama Retail Association recognized Cohen and the two sons who help him run his business as the Silver Alabama Retailer of the Year in the Annual Sales $5 Million to $20 Million category.
Cohen attended the University of Alabama and Auburn University Montgomery. Cohen founded the business in 1956 as The Record Shop, selling records and tapes. Cohen credits his retail knowledge to his father, Eli Cohen, who had owned a coin-operated music and records store.
The record store evolved into an electronics and appliance retailer in 1977. Currently, Cohens Electronics and Appliances Inc. has 25 employees and is run by Cohen and two of his three sons, David and Michael.
