MONTGOMERY – Jan Clevenger, chairman of the Western Division for Belk Inc., recently was elected to the Alabama Retail Association’s board of directors. Clevenger’s term began Jan. 1. Belk has been an Alabama Retail member since 2007.
Alabama Retail and the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Business recognized Clevenger and Belk as the 2013 Gold Alabama Retailer of the Year in the Annual Sales More Than $20 Million category.
Clevenger, who works out of Belk’s Birmingham office, has been in her current position for six years. She joined the company in 2000 as a ladies accessories divisional merchandise manager. Prior to joining Belk, she served 16 years in merchandising and store management positions with Macy’s in Atlanta, Ga.
Belk, based in Charlotte, N.C., is the largest privately-owned department store in the United States. It operates 301 stores in 16 Southern states, including 22 in Alabama. Belk was founded in 1888 and in August 2006 purchased the Alabama-based Parisian chain from Saks Inc. The Parisian stores, including those in Alabama, were rebranded as Belk stores in 2007. Belk currently employs more than 2,445 in our state.
